Online Books

There is a plethora of books online to be read for free. Some websites allow downloading to a Kindle, Nook or just read on the website.

Here is a list of FREE books to browse through:

  • Google Books : you may select "full view" or "free only" in search results to read a full book, otherwise you may read the book with limited pages.
  • Project Gutenberg : this has over 33,000 free ebooks ( I found Frank Baum the author of the Wizard of Oz books)
  • The International Children's Library : This has a wide variety of children's literature to read through.

I'm Down

Yes! the title is I'm Down.

This is another great Laugh Out Loud book about race and poverty. Of course the cover caught my attention!!!

Mishna Wolff tells her story of growing up with her single father who thinks he is black. They live in a black neighborhood and her father is constantly telling her to stand up for herself and find some sisters. Her own sister fits in, she can dance and is able to make friends easily.

What makes the conflict in Mishna's life is that she attends a school for smart kids which happens to be mostly made up of rich white kids. The story takes a turn from race conflicts to economic differences but once you read this you will realize that both go hand in hand and Mishna is caught in the middle of these issues.

This is a great read!!

The House of the Scorpion

This was a suggested book by a student and I LOVE it so far.

I can't put it down.

Finished it finally...
So this put me on edge wondering what will happen next to Matt the clone or as the community considered a monster.

Questions to ponder:

1. Why do you think Tam Lin, Celia and Maria treat Matt like a human and support him?

2. What do you think of a man who wants to live for 140 plus years?

3. Is a clone born from a cow still a human?

4. Some readers felt the ending was quick and all the problems solved, do you agree or disagree?

Book Summary:

In a future where humans despise clones, Matt enjoys special status as the young clone of El Patron, the 142 - year old leader of a corrupt drug empire nestled between Mexico and the United States.
